Swan House

Quietly veiled within layers of wild and cultivated plants and trees, this existing timber frame house from the 1960s was the site of project for a large extension to enhance the ground floor accommodation for family and friends.

The project is an expansive cabin-like space with a series of slot rooflights providing daylight from above.  The painted ceiling of rough sawn timber boards over exposed rafters maximises light reflection in the high space and creates texture and depth which resonates with the natural foliage outside.  Strong horizontal glazing to the extension helps stretch the space outward into the landscape.

Externally, the roof form and composition of windows are kept simple to sit gently in relation to the business of the original home and rough sawn Siberian Larch cladding responds to the woodland setting.
