Cherry Ground

A modern extension and renovation of a semi-detached rural cottage on the edge of the Dedham Vale National Landscape overlooking fields and orchards.  The client wished to enlarge and improved living areas and enable better connection and views of the surrounding landscape.

The revised ground floor layout is organised around a generous new entrance inserted at one end of the existing structure, connecting it to a new kitchen & dining side wing extension.  Accommodation and circulation within the cottage, which had been extended previously on multiple occasions, was rationalised by selective alterations including a carefully crafted reversal of access to the stair without disruption to the first-floor rooms above.  The arrangement provides well-proportioned and practical spaces, both functional and celebratory.

Complimenting tones of the attached thatched Listed cottage, a pale palette of standing seam metal roofing and two types of monochromatic timber cladding was used to create cohesion and regulate scale whilst maintaining a subtle distinction between the new and historic forms and fabric.
