Orchard House
The site for this house was subdivided from an existing domestic orchard near the market town of Woodbridge at the source of the River Deben. The client was a young family, and the project was a new home with additional guest accommodation and home office.
The plan is organised around the main open-plan reception areas on the ground floor, using partial screening and views between rooms to create a series of versatile family spaces. An open-riser oak stair brings light down from the vaulted ceiling to the landing and bedrooms at first floor level above into the centre of the plan. The irregular perimeter of the home, used to address planning constraints, enables double or triple aspect glazing to ground floor rooms and floods both levels with natural light.
The house is finished internally with clean and crafted natural materials. A restrained palette of traditional materials, plain clay tiles and untreated timber cladding, is used with modern detailing externally.
