Kingsfield
This half-timbered house was built during the expansion of the town around the park at the beginning of the 20th century when the local demolition of mediaeval buildings made salvage materials readily available for reuse. It featured an eclectic range of craftwork and detailing and an early form of cavity wall.
The project was an extensive refurbishment which preserved and enhanced the existing, and added a contrasting new, light and transparent extension to the back with continuous, full height rear and corner glazing to both sides.
Strong colours and handcrafted materials were selected to relate to the richness of the garden and complement existing timberwork and Arts and Crafts influences. A continuous rooflight in the new sedum roof brings daylight into the house along the abutment to the new room and a monochromatic external palette of dark windows and Shou Sugi Ban charred and oiled vertical timber cladding is used to create an understated quality.
